Our holistic approach considers each individual in their entirety. We focus on their strengths and offer support to overcome any challenges they may encounter while living independently.

Independent Living Skills

We promote engagement in everyday activities helping young adults to develop essential life skills. We encourage them to develop confidence and independence through positive reinforcement.

Learning Life Skills

Many people take the life skills they’ve learned for granted. At Avicenna Supported Living, we help young adults develop essential life skills, such as:

  • Planning menus
  • Preparing shopping lists
  • Shopping and learning ways to save money
  • Budget planning
  • Staying safe in the community
  • Navigating public transport
  • Practicing road safety

We tailor our support to meet each individual’s needs, ensuring they gain the skills necessary for independent living.

Active Support

Active support is a person-centred approach designed to enhance the quality of life for people with learning disabilities by promoting engagement and participation in everyday activities. This method focuses on enabling individuals to take an active role in their own lives, encouraging them to perform tasks and make choices, rather than passively receiving care.

Active support involves breaking down activities into manageable steps, providing appropriate assistance, and offering positive reinforcement to build confidence and skills. The approach emphasises the importance of meaningful involvement in daily routines, fostering independence, and enhancing social interactions. Support workers are trained to recognise opportunities for engagement and to adapt their support to each person’s unique abilities and preferences.

By promoting active participation, this approach helps individuals with learning disabilities develop new skills, increase their self-esteem, and improve their overall well-being. Active support not only benefits the individuals receiving care but also enriches the care experience by fostering a more collaborative and empowering relationship between support workers and those they support.

Health

Attending Medical Appointments and taking medication independently

Medical Appointments

We assist service users with medical appointments, helping them understand discussions, prepare questions, and providing reassurance. Recognising apprehensions about hospitals, we offer support during overnight stays when needed. Collaborating with families and friends ensures continuity of care and support for their loved ones.

Medication Management

We support service users in achieving independence with medication management, helping them understand their medications and using prompts to ensure correct usage. We guide them on how to order and return medications, an essential life skill. For those unable to manage independently our trained staff administer their medications.

Healthy Lifestyle and Nutrition

We support service users in making healthy lifestyle choices, encouraging activities such as exercise and swimming. Using tools like social stories and consultations with health professionals, we educate them on the risks of unhealthy habits while respecting their autonomy. We also promote balanced diets, recognising that occasional treats are perfectly fine in moderation.
